Fancy dress
Posted March 8, 2010 by toby09 in Society
An American themed fancy dress party gave our hostess a superb range of dishes to choose from. She chose a classic American thanksgiving dinner. The food was delicious. It was served buffet style and included turkey, redcurrant jelly and an assortment of veggies. Dessert was pecan pie served with a spoil-for-choice assortment of home-made ice creams. I don't know whether these were traditional USA fare, but they were gorgeous.

Food menu:

Oven roasted and honey glazed Turkey basted in its own juices

Stuffing made with home made-breadcrumbs to a traditional recipe

Fat, juicy butter glazed carrots garnished with parsley

Butternut squash, roasted and garnished with herbs

Creamy Garlic mash

Buttered Corn on the cob

Redcurrant jelly

Pecan pie

Home made ice-cream - lemon sorbet, mango and ginger, rum and raisin, five berries and chocolate fudge.

Cheese platter

We finished off the meal with plenty of American coffee and tea.

Games:

Quizzes on America's famous people and landmarks included the San-Francisco Bridge, Lincoln memorial and Will Smith! We split into two teams to play charades based on American Oscar winning films. We covered everything from 'A street car named Desire' to 'Slum dog millionaire' so this gave every age-group a chance to guess the answer. This was a great way to lead into dinner - the team who finished first was first in line for the food!! There's nothing like a room full of hungry people to get the teamwork buzzing. Of course I have to say that I was on the winning team!!

To round off the evening we had a competition for the best fancy dress outfit and the most original fancy dress outfit. The best outfit award went to a rather young George Washington! and the most original fancy dress outfit went to a Grand Heritage Mississippi Gambler

Family parties are slowly creeping back in fashion and I'm not surprised. Family and friends enjoyed themselves immensely. Fancy dress, and games, good food and drink are winning combination's. We all had fun and can't wait for next year's do!

Maybe you don't want a white wedding dress, with all of the lace and frills you see in the movies. Maybe you want something a little more funky, something that suits your unique personality and beliefs, whatever they might be, and you don't think you're going to find it wading through a sea of white at a retail bridal outlet. What options do you have left?

If you have a favorite store or boutique, you can always see what they carry in terms of dresses. A wedding dress doesn't have to cost thousands, or even hundreds, of dollars, to be special. If you know the owner, you can ask to look at the wholesale catalog; there may be more dresses tiffany jewelry available from a manufacturer that they don't normally carry. You can either have them order it for you, or find the manufacturer online and see if they have a retail webshop. Wholesalers often require a minimum order amount, in cost and number of pieces, so it's not really all that feasible for the regular consumer to buy directly like that.

Thrift stores are also great places to come across unique, one-of-kind pieces, if you don't mind being the only person to have worn your wedding dress. What was too loud or the wrong color for one woman might be just perfect on you. In addition to finding a dress that people will remember for years to come, you'll also save a lot of money and reduce your environmental impact by buying used instead of new.

If the season's right, wander around craft shows, music festivals, and other places that feature artisan vendors. Many of the clothes you can find there have that groovy bohemian vibe to them. This also gives you a chance to talk to a seamstress or dressmaker and see what they would charge for a custom-made dress, if nothing they have already prom Dresses done suits your fancy. A dress tailored to your taste and shape from the outset means you'll look nothing less than fabulous on your big day.

You can also check the Internet to see what's out there. Shops like ButterflyMama, Hippie Clothing, and Snake Mountain Threads have beautiful dresses from renewable resources and fair trade sources. eBay is another great place to look for clothing, like a thrift store cranked all the way up to eleven. Check out the various "ethnic" categories, as well as "vintage" to find something really stand-out.

So what is a vintage wedding dress?

As with jewelry, in the world of dresses also you will find two terms 'vintage' and 'antique' used side by side creating a good deal of confusion.

There is a little difference between these two terms.

Antique dresses are those made in 1920 or earlier. "Vintage" is a term that is generally used to refer to the dresses wedding dresses that were made 25 or more years ago.

What is special about vintage wedding dresses? Why should you opt for one?

Just recall the scene from Sound of music where Julie Andrews set the screen on fire in her classical bridal get up! The satins, the laces, the flare, the feminine neckline-everything makes the bride look like a character from the pages of fairy tale!

This is precisely the essence of the vintage wedding dresses-they transport you back to a forgotten era!

The vintage wedding dress becomes a must, when your wedding ceremony is based on a historical theme. The bride and groom taking the vow dressed in vintage wedding gowns and suits add drama to the entire ceremony.

Then modern couples are increasingly choosing the castles or other historical palaces as their wedding venues and in that case, only a vintage wedding dress can do justice to the whole arrangement.

There is another case when, the bride and groom go for classic dressing style-when they are passionately in love with the Hollywood classics like "It Happened One Night." These are ED Hardy the likes of movies that inspire today's couples to dress like the stars of the yester years.

But most important reason why you should consider buying a vintage wedding dress is: they exemplify the extra ordinary craftsmanship and exquisite details for half or less prices that you are expected to pay for an off-the-rack dress with comparable detailing.

Things to keep in mind when you are buying your dream dress

Don't get swayed away by the magical old world charm of these elegant dresses-being old means they invariably carry some imperfections like odors, slight strains, missing buttons, torn up laces and so on. But don't get worked up-they are easy to repair. While bargaining, keep these hidden costs in mind.
One thing you must be very careful of and that is the size. Always check the exact measurement; this will help you get the perfect size for your body type.

If you are buying online, deal only with renowned sellers and also read descriptions of the dress carefully.

Looking for the best place to buy vintage wedding dress? Here are some great places to start with:

* Vintage store or antique stores. Thrift stores for the 70's and 80's fashion.
* Ebay makes a reliable source for vintage dresses.
* The Frock.com for higher end items.
* Vintagegown.com for high end, exclusive items.
* VintageVixen for budget conscious. One advantage of this shop is they sell deadstock dresses that have never been worn.

So you'll find that it's not too difficult to take your vows in a classic setting for a truly beautiful occasion!
If you have been invited to a fancy dress party and are struggling for ideas for an outfit a great idea is sailor fancy dress. Sailor costumes fit in with many themes. You can use the outfits for a film theme such as top gun or Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman. The outfits can be both formal and more casual.

Officer costumes are great for a formal party as it is much the same as an officer or captain on a real ship would wear. Old style costumes are more informal. Costumes can also reflect different periods with modern outfits as well as older traditional sailor outfits.

The type of outfits available for women tend to be either some sort of formal officer outfit or something a little bit more revealing and cheeky. If you are confident then a cheeky outfit will look great. Outfits tend to come with hats but some well used accessories such as shoes, anchor necklaces or anchor stockings can really finish off an outfit.

For men's costumes the outfits again come in traditional formal sailor wear or you can get older type sailor outfits such as dark navy or white outfits seen in some of the early sailor films and cartoons such as Popeye.

Children can also get involved in dressing up with a wide range of costumes available for them. While children love dressing up as pirates, dressing up as a sailor can also be great, especially if it is a family party as you can all go in outfits from the same theme.
