Animal cruelty
prevention in your neighborhood

Animal cruelty/neglect is a crime that goes unnoticed
and
unreported almost every day because people either
do not
know that an
animal is being abused and/or
neglected and
often, people do not know
who or
where to report animal
cruelty crimes to. These innocent
animals
who are suffering
in silence are crying
out for our help. We cannot
hear their
cries, but
it is painfully obvious in the eyes of an
abused/neglected
animal. For those who cannot see or understand
what
animal is or what counts as animal cruelty, we are more
than willing to
help you understand the facts and
reality of
animal
cruelty..

We would like to
suggest
tips of how you can keep watch over the animals
in
your area and to
make sure that none of these
beautiful
animals are being abused or
neglected
in any form. These
animals love us and trust us with
their
whole hearts. They
are worth protecting and
saving..

After all, pets and
wildlife
need care and protection, too, and a system
such as
the Neighborhood
Watch for Animals can
make a community
safer for everyone who lives
there. If your neighborhood
already has a Watch
program, you can share
these ideas with
other
participants. Or you can start a Neighborhood
Watch
for Animals program of your own. You and other concerned
citizens
can watch over these animals and make sure that
their owners are
taking
proper care of their
animals..

To help protect
animals
in
your community, follow these suggestions:

Know Your
Neighborhood's
Pets

In a perfect world,
no
pets
would be out on their own, roaming the
neighborhood.
But unfortunately,
some dogs and
cats escape or are allowed
to roam unsupervised. Some
have regular routes and know
their way home; others get
lost and need
help to get back to
their families.
If you find a lost or stray animal,
please
do not
leave them outside alone. It is very dangerous in most
areas
of cities and even urban towns for animals to roam the
streets..

The more you know
about
the
animals in your neighborhood, the more
you'll be able to
help. It can
be as simple is
paying attention to the dogs
and cats who live around
you. That way, when you see an
animal out alone, you'll
be more likely
to know how to
contact his or her
owner or how to get the animal
home..

Consider creating a
neighborhood roster of pets and pet owners to use in
emergencies.
Include pets' names, basic descriptions
or
photographs, and contact
information.
Encourage all pet
owners to keep collars and
identification tags on their pets
or microchips. And
keep the phone

In most cases of
animal
neglect, after a neglectful owner has been
reported
and an officer is
sent to the residence,
simple ignoranceӔ
is blamed and the owner
claims
that he/she will better the
situation for the animal and
start
taking better care for

in tragic cases, it does

You can help
prevent this cycle of ignorance and misery.
You
can help first by being observant..

    Is a situation
getting
worse?

situation from what
it was before?
    Do you
hear barking, whimpering, meowing
or scratching from inside
a home after the resident has
moved?

animal still in
the same neglectful
situation?
    Do you see an
act of obvious cruelty?

Don't turn your
back,
but
don't put yourself at risk through
direct confrontation.
Call the
police or your
local animal shelter immediately.
Inform officers that
the same owner was reported previously

crime and give
information about the previous
report with the specific date and
possibly the name of
the
first officer(s) who were sent to the location
before. Also
be alert to increasing reports of animal

Watch for Pets in Parked
Cars

A pet left in a
parked
car
can be in danger, especially in warm
weather. On a warm
day, the
temperature in a
parked car can reach more than 100
degrees in a matter
of minutes, even with the windows
partially open. A pet
can easily
suffer heatstroke or
suffocate and
die. If you see a pet in a car who
appears to
be
showing signs of heat stress, call police or an animal
shelter right away. Watch for pets left in cars in cold
weather
as
well. In certain states, leaving an
animal in a parked
car is taken
very seriously as
an animal cruelty
crime..

Stranger
Danger

If pets start
disappearing
in your neighborhood or you see an
increasing
number of "lost pet"
signs, advise
your neighbors to be on
the look-out for a potential
pet
thief. Urge pet owners to

safely confined or

to those who have
trouble providing essential pet
care. Offer to assist by
walking dogs, cleaning litter
boxes, feeding
pets, or taking
pets to the
veterinarian. If you notice that an elderly
neighbor's pet
is suddenly left outside or appears to be sick,
take
note. It can be a sign that your neighbor is unable to
care for the
animal, or even an indication that the
older
person is being abused by
a
caretaker..

In most cases of
elderly
pet
owners, they can often become sick
suddenly and cannot
care for their
pets while
they are either being hospitalized
or recovering, you
can
volunteer to help care for their pet
until
the owner is recovered and
healthy enough to care for

This page is dedicated to the "All American Hero" known to most as Pitbulls. The videos have been created by people who love this breed and recognize that there is another side to the image that the media presents. Some images and stories tell of dogs that have gone above and beyond to serve and protect. In some cases these dogs have paid the ultimate price for their love and loyalty. Julie & Snow at Flipside, Nashville, Tennessee..Hello world! February 9, 2009 Hi - my name is Julie and I am the official blogger for a Pit Bull named Snowflake. I am merely the conduit for her thoughts, feelings and experiences. She would Blog herself if only she had the time in her exciting new life, or an opposable thumb! Snow has had a sad start to an 18 month life. We only know about her experiences from December of 2008 when Donna rescued her - what happened to her to leave her in the condition she was in we can only guess. Please see this Video Montage which Donna created to chronicle Snows sad puppyhood in Memphis. As the video shows Donna has worked a miracle in healing this little Snow Angel. Snowflake: rescued 12/05/08 About Julie: I am Snows new companion. Donna asked me to write something about myself and Donna is a hard woman to say no to, so here goes: I am a poet, a yogini and a Conservation Biologist. I started on this path of Conservation Biology later in life. I was inspired to go back to school at age 38, had the nerve to apply to Yale with no prior college science or math classes, and they were crazy enough to admit me. The reintroduction of wolves inspired me to do this and I studied wolves and their behavior in captivity and in the wild. I later worked on African endangered species issues and came to specialize in trying to find creative solutions to help people and wildlife around the world. My dogs have always been influential in my life. I learned so much from my two female huskies and they set me on this life path in so many ways. I canҒt wait to find out why Snow has come into my life and to see what paths we will travel together! About Snow: Snow is a female Pit Bull who in the 18 months since she arrived on Planet Earth has had the following happen: She had her ears cut almost completely off - Donna calls them warrior earsђ and this is done on fighting dogs to make them look fearsome and to prevent dogs from losing too much blood while fighting (if they go into shock they cannot fight), she had puppies who most probably were born dead or froze or starved to death, she was fought and has the scars to prove it, she had a wire collar embedded into her neck which also has left its mark, her pelvis was fractured in 3 places, her knee is shattered, and she almost starved to death. Now enters Donna who has surely earned her place in doggie heaven and has enough good Karma to last several lifetimes! About Donna Donna is a lot like the dogs she rescues - her heart is huge, her courage is great and she doesnt take no for an answer. IҒve only known her for a few weeks but have heard the awe in the voices of others in the Pit Rescue community and now that Ive come to know her a little bit I understand completely. This Blog and Snow only exist because of DonnaҒs efforts. I hope she will add a few words here to describe who she is and why she does what she doeswe love you Donna! My foster mom said that the name Snowflake fits me because I am so white and so unique. Snowflakes are like fingerprints, no two are alike. I am living in a foster home in a small town north of Memphis, Tennessee. I live with several other pit bulls (all rescues like me) and I like them a lot. Some of the dogs are quiet and some are rowdy but they are all very nice to me. When mom carried me inside her house, I was very frightened of all the dogs but she assured me that they would not hurt me, and she was right. They welcomed me into the pack!!! My nights are spent spleeping on a big, soft comfortable bed with mom and a pit bull named Merci. Merci has very short ears like I do. Merci and I have a lot in common. I have a broken pelvis but Doc Williams said my hip will heal with time and tender loving care. Before I came to live with my foster mom and all of these dogs, I lived in hell and have the scars to prove it҅.. I am not sure how I came to be rescued, but I am thankful that I was.. Snowflake is one of the most perfect dogs I have rescued since I began rescuing dogs some years ago. I would love to keep her myself but because I am a rescuer, I must let her go so I can rescue other dogs that are in similar tragic situations. ..
